TRAVERSE CITY, MI-  In a tight game until in the ninth inning, the Evansville Otters(8-6) were able to pull away for a 5-2 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums(6-8).  Pictured is Adam Cornwell who went six innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, while striking out six in a Sheila Babbitt photograph.

The Beach Bums started the game quickly by getting walks from Arby Fields and Kenny Peoples-Walls, and a single by Will Kengor to load the bases with nobody out. Luke Lowery drove in Fields while grounding into a double play but that’s all that Traverse City could muster in the inning. Evansville responded in the top of the second getting RBI singles by Luis Vilorio and Manny Cruz to give the Otters the one run advantage.

The game went scoreless from there until the ninth inning when Evansville rallied. It was capped off by an RBI infield single by Cruz and a two run triple by Ryan Long, extending the Otters lead to four. In the bottom of the frame, Peoples-Walls singled to center then moved to second when Kengor reached on an error.  Lowery hit an RBI single to score Peoples-Walls, bringing the tying run to the plate but the comeback stalled there.

Both starters had one rough inning early on but settled down to make it a tight game. Austin Nicely earned the win for Evansville, going seven strong innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks, improving to 2-0. Adam Cornwell is dealt the loss in a six inning effort as he allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six. He falls to 0-2. Kyano Cummings got his first save of the season as he pitched the last two innings.
