Grizzlies Knock Off Beach Bums 18-4
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Gateway Grizzlies scored the first 12 runs of the ball game and ended up cruising past the Traverse City Beach Bums 18-4 on Saturday night at Wuerfel Park. The Beach Bums welcomed HGTV star Carter Oosterhouse and actress Amy Smart to TC to promote their charity, Carter’s Kids, which the Beach Bums raised money for by wearing special jerseys that were auctioned off. Gateway jumped on Traverse City starter Casey Delgado with two runs in the first inning to open up an early 2-0 lead. Delgado appeared to settle down in the second, but gave up five consecutive singles with two outs to bring home four runs, making it 6-0. Delgado (5-3) allowed a season high six earned runs on nine hits in just 1.2 innings.
The Grizzlies kept the pedal to the medal with four more runs in the third inning, accentuated by a Michael Wing three-run homer that opened the lead to 10-0. Two more runs crossed the plate in the fourth for Gateway on a Richard Seigel two-run blast, pushing the visitors in front 12-0.
Traverse City had a two-out rally of its own in the last of the fourth, stringing together three hits that culminated in a Chris Cowell RBI single to make it 12-1. After Gateway got another run in the top of the sixth, the Beach Bums countered with three runs to draw to within 13-4 after six. Josh Miller, Jeff DeBlieux, and Rob Benedict accounted for the three runs with RBI singles.
Miller (2-for-4, R, RBI), Cowell (3-for-4, R, RBI), and DeBlieux (2-for-3, RBI) each posted multi-hit games to lead the Traverse City offense.
Gateway would score the final five runs of the contest and finish the game with a franchise-record 26 hits on the night. Aaron Newcomb (8-2) was the beneficiary of the run support, lasting 5.1 innings while giving up four runs on 10 hits.
The Beach Bums will look to salvage the finale of the three-game set on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Rusty Shellhorn (4-0, 2.98) gets the ball for Traverse City opposite Gateway’s Tucker Jensen (5-2, 4.22). ).
