BIG INNINGS PROPEL BEACH BUMS TO WIN
AVON, OH- The Traverse City Beach
Bums (34-41) used two five-run innings to defeat the Lake Erie Crushers (40-36)
in Friday’s series opener by a final score of 12-6.
With one out in the first, the
Beach Bums were able to take an early lead. Isaac Benard smashed a liner off
the pitcher for an infield hit and moved to third on a Will Kengor double.
Steve Lohr dribbled a grounder towards third, scoring Benard.
In the second, Traverse City sent
eight men to the plate, scoring five runs. Alec Olund started the offense with
a one out double. Two batters later, Benard doubled in Olund to double the
lead. After Kengor walked and Lohr was hit by a pitch to load the
bases, Alexis Rivera cranked a grand slam over the right field wall, his fifth
homer of the season, for a 6-0 Bums lead.
Lake Erie responded with a big
inning of their own in the bottom of the frame, sending nine men to the plate.
Dalton Wheat hit an RBI single, Mason Brown drove in two with a single, and so
did Dane Hutcheon, making it a 6-5 game.
The Beach Bums put together
another big inning in the fourth, bringing 10 men the plate. Kengor hit a one
out single, Lohr walked, then two batters later, Luke Lowery hit an RBI double
to left. Connor Oliver followed with a three run homer against his former team,
clearing the bases. Noah McGowan, Olund, and Ryan Kemp each hit singles, the
last scoring another run for an 11-5 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Lake
Erie got a run back on a Hutcheon RBI single. Kengor then led off the fifth
with his third hit of the game then Luke Lowery drove him home with a bloop
single into right field. From there, the bullpen only allowed a couple of hits
the rest of the way, as the staff combined for twelve strikeouts.
Andrew Click came out of the
bullpen for his first professional win for the Beach Bums. He went two and a
third innings, only gave up one hit and walked one, evening his record to 1-1.
Justin Sinibaldi suffered the loss to drop to 1-3 on the season. He went five
innings, allowing 12 runs on 15 hits and four walks.
On Saturday night, the Beach Bums and Lake Erie Crushers play the middle game of this weekend’s three game set.
