JOLIET, IL – The Traverse City Beach Bums’(35-54) and the Joliet Slammers’(41-49) locked up in a classic pitcher’s duel on Sunday afternoon but the Slammers were able to come up with the walk-off win by a final score of 1-0. 

The lone run came in the bottom of the ninth inning, which started with Melvin Rodriguez singling and Ridge Hoopii-Haslam being walked. Edwin Gomez tried to bunt them both up a base but Luke Lowery threw out Rodriguez at third. After a strikeout put the Bums an out away from forcing extra innings, Danny Zardon singled to center to score Hoopii-Haslam to win the game for Joliet.

Duke von Schamann picked up the complete game shutout victory, allowing five hits while striking out seven. He improves to 5-7. Kramer Champlin is dealt the hard-luck loss to drop to 7-8. He went he distance allowing the lone run on seven hits and two walks while he struck out six.

                                                                               BEACH BUMS DOUBLED UP BY SLAMMERS SATURDAY NIGHT

On Saturday night, the Beach Bums came back from a three-run hole but gave up five runs in the fourth, falling to the Slammers by a final score of 8-4. 

Joliet got on the board first when Ridge Hoopii-Haslam grounded in a run in the first. In the third, Edwin Gomez hit a two-run double, and the Slammers led 3-0. Steven Patterson led off the top of the fourth with a walk then moved to second on Luke Lowery’s single. Alexis Rivera followed with a single of his own to load the bases. Arby Fields drove in Patterson with a sacrifice fly, moving Lowery to second. With Jeremy Stidham at the plate, Lowery scored on a wild pitch and Alexis Rivera scored on an error to tie the game. 

In the bottom of the inning, Joliet took the lead right back and extended it as well. Dom Iero hit an RBI single, Travis Bolin hit a two-run double, and Hoopii-Haslam hit a two-run single to give the Slammers an 8-3 lead. With a new pitcher on the mound, Arby Fields led off the seventh with his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot, pulling the Bums within four.  

Matt Sandoval picked up his first career win, hurling six innings, giving up three runs, two of them earned, on three hits and four walks, while striking out four. Joel Toribio pitched one inning out of the pen, and he allowed five runs on three hits and three walks, as he falls to 1-1 on the season.

After a well deserved day off in their lengthy final road trip of the season, the Beach Bums take on the Schaumburg Boomers for the final road series of 2017.  Tuesday night's first pitch from Boomers Stadium is scheduled for 7:35pm(EDT) and the voice of the Beach Bums, Tom Willms, will go on the air with the Budweiser Pre-Game Show at 7:15 on 101.9FM-The Bay.
